If you live in Clifton, Paterson, Passaic, Prospect Park, or Woodland Park, you probably received a piece of mail recently: the 2026 Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) Drinking Water Quality Report.
At first glance, it looks like a standard piece of government mail. The headline news is positive—the PVWC met all state health standards and reported zero water quality violations last year. But as a community, we need to look beyond the "pass/fail" grade. When we dig into the actual numbers and the science of our local infrastructure, there is a deeper story about our daily health, and more importantly, what we can do to protect our homes.
Here is the human side of the data, and the simple steps we can take to keep our families safe.
The Root of the Issue: Our Open Reservoirs
The water that reaches our taps comes from the Passaic River, and it is heavily treated at the Little Falls plant. But before it gets to our homes, it is stored in three open-air, uncovered reservoirs (Great Notch, New Street, and Stanley Levine).
Because the water is exposed to the sky, it is also exposed to wildlife, storm runoff, and bird droppings. To keep the water safe from bacteria, the utility has to pump it full of heavy chlorine.
Why this matters to you: This creates a domino effect in our homes. First, the chlorine creates a very strong odor. Second, if you take a hot shower in an enclosed bathroom, the heat vaporizes that heavy chlorine into a gas, meaning we are breathing in chemical vapors while we bathe. Finally, the chlorine doesn't even kill certain hard-shelled parasites, like Cryptosporidium, meaning biological threats can still slip through.
The "Lead Paradox" in Our Pipes
Most cities add a protective coating to their water to stop lead pipes from leaching into the drinking water. The PVWC cannot do this. If they added that coating to our open-air reservoirs, the sunlight would cause massive algae blooms.
As a result, our water is highly corrosive. As it travels through older city pipes or the brass fixtures in our own homes, it strips lead directly into the water.
The Evaporation Trap: Stop Boiling Tap Water for Pasta!
This is perhaps the most important daily habit we need to change. Many of us think boiling tap water purifies it. But the research points to something called the Evaporation Concentration Paradox.
Our water contains trace amounts of lead, as well as industrial "forever chemicals" known as PFAS. Boiling water does not remove Lead or PFAS. In fact, when you boil water for spaghetti or tea, the pure water evaporates as steam, but the toxic chemicals stay in the pot. You are actually making the chemical dose stronger right before you drop your food in.
The Empowered Household: Our Action Plan
We don't need to panic, but we do need to be proactive. Here is how we adapt:
1. The 5-Minute Morning Flush: Every morning, before you make coffee or brush your teeth, run your cold water tap for 3 to 5 minutes. This flushes out the stagnant water that has been absorbing lead in your pipes overnight
2. Cold Water Only: Never use the hot tap for drinking, cooking, or making baby formula. Hot water is corrosive and pulls lead from pipes much faster.
3. Upgrade the Kitchen Filter: A standard water pitcher won't cut it. Because our water also has incredibly high natural Sodium (up to 138.8 ppm), standard filters leave it behind. We need to invest in Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems. These push water through a microscopic membrane, physically blocking the Lead, PFAS, Sodium, and biological cysts.
4. Protect the Shower: If you own your home, consider adding a Whole-House Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Tank where the water enters the house. This acts like a sponge, stripping the chlorine out before it ever reaches your showerhead, neutralizing the breathing risks.
